HISTORY OF IT WORKS

History

IT Works President and CEO, Jim Wrenn, PhD, launched IT Works out of his home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1987. At that time, it was a simple way to put food on the table. Now it is more about fulfilling his life purpose with a passion for software development in the research community.

Dr. Wrenn got his initiation into the grant management software business when he began working as a contract programmer. His first jobs included programming grant and financial management tools on an as-needed basis. Little did he realize that over the next 22 years, not only would he still work with his original clients but his company would install over 240 financial and grant management solutions in over 95 major universities and research hospitals in the United States and Canada.

IT Works has developed 5 primary products over the years including Department Manager, College Administrator, Department Accountant, On-Line Management, and Effort Administrator.

Originating in 1988, Department ManagerTM is a grant management system which provides the same features and functionality as the College Administrator. This grant tracking software is designed for large departments and centers within major universities as well as independent research institutes and research hospitals.

Developed in 1998, College AdministratorTM is a modular grant accounting software solution for accounting, human resource management, grant management, space management, and the management of re-charge centers. It is designed for small to midsize universities or large colleges and schools within major universities.

Also created in 1998, Department AccountantTM is a shadow accounting system for small departments and research labs. It is extremely affordable, includes numerous financial reports options, and is an excellent replacement for spreadsheet accounting.

Created in 2004, On-Line ManagementTM is an internet-based solution that produces easy-to-read financial statements for administrators and faculty. Designed like an on-line banking system, this research management software works with your existing systems to create a powerful, easy-to-use financial reporting tool.

Effort AdministratorTM, released in 2009 is an internet-based time and effort certification and reporting system for administrators and research faculty. This effort certification software is designed for small to midsize universities, colleges, and independent research institutes.

Now located in Raleigh, North Carolina near the renowned Research Triangle Park, IT Works attracts some of the best and brightest programmers in the country.
